THE BEGINNING

There is a truth that a child’s mother can inspire their career, especially when that career is fashion. My mother, Christine, was a natural at putting outfits together. She had this quiet confidence about her choices. Never fussy. Never following what everyone else was doing. Just... herself.

That’s what I design for now. That version of confidence. The woman who knows what suits her and isn’t afraid to be that version of herself, every single day. Everything I do comes from watching her.

I moved back to South Africa to have my son, and motherhood changed everything. I realised I couldn’t go back to fashion in corporate life, and I realised something else: most women felt the same way I did about their changing bodies.

There was a gap. Not in shops, but in real life. Women needed clothes designed for their actual bodies, not the fantasy version.

So in 2007, I started this.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

I design for one person: me. My technical design philosophy is to make sure everything I design is about three things: fit, form, function. Fit your body. Look like yourself. Actually work in your life.

And this: don’t wear the weight of other people’s opinions. Wear clothes that make you feel fabulous.

I’ve built this with an incredible team of women who’ve grown with me for years. I’m fortunate to give them work, independence, and the chance to build their own careers. We believe you can do absolutely anything you put your mind to.

I love a challenge. And I love building something with women who do too.

THE MAKERS

Margaret (Margie)

Plain machinist (think hems, labels and all the topstitching on garments) | 13 years. Always consistent, dependable and quiet, although on weekends she likes to be a part-time DJ. Her favourite is chocolate cake.

Cheryl

Coverseam machinist (Hems on all knit garments) - 7 years. The quietest of all .... but loves dancing! Cheryl also loves chocolate cake.

Jacky

BIG BOSS - There is nothing she can't do. (Everything but spends most of her time on the overlocker) - 13 years, makes my life simple and is absolutely in charge.... She has a zero tolerance attitude and we are all scared of her, ha ha ha. She is the GLUE of ML. She also has 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren! A big fan of chocolate eclairs

Fareida

Cutter (Cutting Maestro) - 11 yearsThe best cutter but because she has scissors in her hand it is best to tread lightly when she is feeling feisty. She loves black forest cake.

Cindy

Customer service and online orders (started working in our Watershed store in Dec 2014, had a baby boy and has been back with ML for over 3 years in the studio) Keeps me calm... Loves all sweets and chocolates but no one knows where it goes as she is so tiny.

Casey

Examiner and finisher - Jacky's granddaughter. Loves Hot chicken ramen noodles and eats them everyday! Soon to be married....

TIMELESS OVER TRENDY

We could make more. We choose not to. Every piece is tested. Hand-finished where it matters. Built to last. We reinforce seams, pre-treat fabrics, use materials that age beautifully. This means you'll own fewer pieces. Better pieces. Pieces you'll actually reach for year after year. That's the trade-off. And we think it's the right one.
